“I have a phone that’s capable of browsing the internet. However, all my bookmarks are on my PC/laptop. I want to bring all my bookmarks that I have on my PC/laptop everywhere and access them anytime anywhere using my phone”

*** Note – Take a look at Opera Link

Do you have an idea for mobile application and want to turn it into reality?

The “I DARE YOU” series will be updated from time to time and take them as inspirations. OK?

Mobile is a LIFESTYLE and a STATEMENT

Mobile Phones... Can we live without them?

Mobile Phones... Can we live without them?

I lost my phone on my way to LCCT on Wednesday July 22nd before my flight to Penang. It’s not the most recent smartphone in the market but it served me faithfully for 3 years. At first, I am not so worried because I always keep my recent contact and calendar databases backup somewhere in the cloud. I mean, I can live with the fact that I lost my most precious possession…. The moment I realise it was stolen, I said to myself “Relax dude… your data is safe”…

My oh my… Was I wrong? Suddenly, bits and pieces of thoughts hitting my nerve system. Questions like :

“Are you sure your data is safe? All of them?”
“What if the fella unlock your password and access all your sensitive information?”
“You have more than 500 names in your contact database, do you remember their phone numbers? How many do you remember the phone numbers?”
“Did you backup your spreadsheets and documents?”
“Do you remember your next meeting?”

… and many-many MORE!!!

And for the next couple of days, my life becomes so incomplete. Normally, my phone will follow me everywhere I go, I mean EVERYWHERE… it’s the closest and dearest gadget to me.

Mobile is a LIFESTYLE

One of my favourite past-time killing is to read eBooks using my phone. It is fun and I can bring a lot of digital books with me. When I cant understand a certain word in the books that I read, I always have access to the electronic dictionary or surf online to find the meaning. It’s interactive, and resourceful.

Since I lost my phone, I went back to my old habit. Reading paper books. The actual books. This is where it becomes so boring. Reading paper is not interactive. I cant click on the word that I dont understand to copy and paste it inside internet browser. And this really made my life so… mundane…

I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking that mobile has become an important part of my life. A LIFESTYLE. It’s not only a communication tool, it’s more than that. For me, mobile phone is first and foremost, my main tool to access the cloud i.e. internet services (email, social networking, instant messaging, document management, blogging, web surfing etc). After that , it’s the voice.

Mobile is a STATEMENT

A friend of mine, who’s in the management team of a company, told me about one of the questions he normally asks during interview session for new candidates. It is “What phone do you use now?“. According to him, he can evaluate their personalities better after knowing what phone they use and how they use them.

Believe it or not, this is where the society is moving. Mobiles are also A STATEMENT for the owners.

People personalise their phones because it is their dearest possession and they want other people to know their uniqueness. In most cases, phones become accessories to their owners and there’s no limit to it. Some people go even further by decorating their phones with jewellery (diamonds, 24-karat gold etc).

An iPhone studded with diamonds. A statement to the owner

An iPhone studded with diamonds. A statement to the owner

There’s also people who dont want to change the looks of their phones externally but they like to install many applications and games inside their phones to ensure it has the latest and greatest in mobile.

However, for most of us, a mobile phone need to be close to us and show who we are and we customise it according to our taste and we change the wallpapers, ringtones, themes and even the housing to suit our personalities.

Remember, mobile is a lifestyle and a statement. What application do you want to develop that show your personality?

Idea oh Idea…

This is a topic that always made to the Q&A session during MCC 2009 Workshop. In Johor Baharu, Penang and Kuala Terengganu. I mean, everybody is thinking what is the best idea to develop an application and some of them really had some great ideas to start.

The next Google? Or maybe the next Facebook? Wait, what about the next Microsoft? Ah… No, the next Nokia maybe. What? The next Chad Hurley? Or even Kevin Rose?

In Johor Baharu workshop, one of the speakers, Naim Jaafar of Sekolah Bakat, talked about “TALENT”. How to nurture your talent and produce something out of it. Identifying your natural talent is one thing, nurturing it and growing it is another.

Some people need to think to get their ideas. Some other people like to walk around the park and analyse the behaviour of the society before concluding on their ideas. And there are people who read books, watch tvs & surf the net to find ideas. For most people, ideas dont fall from the sky just like that. They need to do something to get ideas.

Looking at some special cases in the world, some people successfully nurtured their talents and become unique in what they do, and their talents leave a mark in the history of the world.

“It is a good idea to have an idea but it is a bad idea not to have any idea… at all”

I Dare You – Part 1

This is the first post of the “I DARE YOU” series. The purpose of this series is to challenge YOU. Yes. YOU! The reader of this blog especially if you are a student of IHLs.

What I will post in this series are just some ideas. They are meant to give you some insights of what are cool things happening in the mobile industry now. These are ideas and just ideas. Nothing more, nothing less.

CHALLENGE NO. 1

“Why cant my phone translates my spoken words to texts? It would be very convenient to be able to speak my thoughts and my phone translates them to written words”

The “I DARE YOU” series will be updated from time to time and take them as inspirations ok :-)

We’re in Terengganu now!

Today, MCC 2009 Workshop reached Kuala Terengganu. As I write this entry, Encik Roslan of SKMM is delivering his keynote address to the students. Pretty good crowd I must say…

There are more than 100 students in the room now and from what I heard, there are more on the way. This is good. Considering the fact that some of them drove all the way from UMP. That’s something like a 200 km away from Kuala Terengganu.

I cant wait to see the reactions from these students about MCC. Today’s session will be divided to 2 panels. One now and another one in the evening.

If you are reading this and you happen to be in Kuala Terengganu, do come to Hotel Grand Continental, Level 4 to know more about MCC 2009!

The Cause and Effect…

Opportunities are everywhere

Look around you. Have you seen someone _not_ obsessed with mobiles nowadays? Mobiles as in “mobile-phones” are the most important possession one can own at the moment. It’s everywhere, not for the rich and famous only.

When everybody around you are glued to their cellphones like there’s no tomorrow, something is cooking… It rings opportunity… not one… but many… opportunities.

Example 1

The Cause

The need to read books (but dont want to carry books everywhere) while waiting for the bus to arrive…

The Effect

… Portable digital books application aka eBooks (e.g. Mobipocket Reader and to certain extent, Amazon’s Kindle)

Mobipocket Reader on Blackberry

Mobipocket Reader on Blackberry

Example 2

The Cause

The need to listen to songs and share favourite tunes with friends. Giving a huge tag saying “I am listening to the latest and greatest!”… or to show your personality, loving classical?

The Effect

Smart mobile music player that allows users to rate their favourite songs and comments on favourite tunes. Look at Mobbler, a mobile application developed to be an extension to Last.FM.

Mobile phones are here to stay. It is more “connected” nowadays than ever before. Mobiles penetrated human lives where no other gadgets (aka electronic devices) could. It screams “freedom”.

Freedom from what? Or what freedom? It’s always remain mysterious. But it promises a lot of things never done before. And to fullfil these promises, YOU must step in.

Look around you… :-)

Mobile Content Challenge 2009 Launch coverage

Mobile World Magazine wrote about the event.

The Sun also did a coverage on the launch event.

Here’s a coverage from Steven Leong’s blog. Plenty of nice photos too :-)

UTeM published some cool photos of the event.

Adoi Magazine, with their take on the event.

Those are some of the news  coverage about Mobile Content Challenge 2009.

MCC 2009 – The game is on!

Yeah folks. The moment of truth is finally here. Mobile Content Challenge 2009 has been officially launched by our Deputy Information, Communications and Culture Minister, Dato’ Joseph Salang on the 30th of June 2009. Read the coverage HERE and HERE. Oh.. And the new logo is sweet!

With this, Mobile Content Challenge aka MCC is now in it’s 3rd year. And I dare to say that this is the only “competition” of it’s kind. Why? Simply because there’s no other competition fully supported by the Information, Communications and Culture Ministry together with Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia, and Maxis, which challenges IHL students to come out with ideas for commercialisation in the mobile telecommunication industry. And I tell you what, it’s somethin’…

The committee behind MCC is cooking a lot of interesting stuff for YOU, the future mobile entrepreneurs. Yes. YOU!

One of them is making MCC as enjoyable as possible. This is where you will see many different things compared to the previous years. As you can see, we have setup this “official” blog which will be updated regularly during the competition (and hopefully after that). This blog will give you as many insights as possible of what MCC is all about.

Other than this blog, there will also some interesting stuff going on which will expand your horizon on the huge opportunities in the mobile industry. So stay with us and watch this space!
